The leader essentially brings the follower across in a 180 turn so that their positions are now reversed. It's practical purpose is to help a couple maneuver away from crowded areas of the dance floor and visually serves as a transition between turn combinations. The cross body lead has countless variations and can be done in open or closed positions.
