Just go. If you're thinking ballroom, I know ladies who took it up (beginner lessons) in their 70's and 80's. Everybody starts at zero, so you'll have plenty of company, and it will be completely comfortable once you get started. You'll find that your age will not be at all unusual in the studio, so that needn't be a consideration at all. Can you become one of the world's top dancers? probably not, but you can still become outstanding if you want and your health hold up. I even saw an old acquaintance competing at age 92 a few months ago, and out-dancing a lot of the youngsters.
References :
Bite the bullet and do it. Start with group dance lessons. They are a good way to begin, and there is something comforting knowing that there are actually people out there who dance at the same level you do.

An advantage of many group lessons is that you are forced to dance with other dance partners, which has social benefits as well as improving your technique.

Get out the Yellow Pages, or visit the USA Dance website: http://www.usabda.org/, to locate a local chapter: http://usabda.org/home/our_chapters/find_a_chapter/index.cfm

You will find a lot of encouragement and support.

My advice: go rent the movie Shall We Dance with Richard Gere. His character does just what you describe -- beginning dance lessons.
The studio scenes show all the mishaps and victories and it's just a lovely little film.

Q: Shall we dance?
A: I would love to dance.
References :
I'm only 15 but I don't think you should be embarrassed to ask at all. dance is a great exercise and it is so much fun to do. I think you should start taking dance classes and feel completely confident in it. age is absolutely nothing to be concerned about, it means nothing. if you really want to do it, go for it. happy dancing!
References :
There are plenty of schools that have adult dancing classes so people like yourself wont be embarassed. It all depends on what type of dancing you wont to do. My parents attend rock and roll dancing lessons together with a bunch of people their own age, and they have a great time, and they're older than you! Also persuade your friends to start with you, so then you wont go through the embarassment on your own
References :
Yes, Visualize this I am a 6'2" 240 lb football player and my college coach forced me to take Ballet classes. If I can overcome the initial embarrassment, and humiliation of being in this class you can ask about dance class.

Now you can stop laughing!!

P.S. I didn't wear the tights, I have my dignity.
References :
Go for it! Women have learned to fly airplanes in their 80's and learning something new and interesting is truly living the life God gave us. You will learn a lot of grace, meet interesting people and even if you were the eldest in the class, I have found younger people enjoy that and they are even pretty inspired by one with your spirit. I will feel sad if you don't do it. You have nothing to be embarrassed about, dear. A lot of women go to college well into middle age and you might feel a tad of discomfort for a few days but it wears off as you really get into it. Have fun! If yhou don't try it, you will probably always look back with regret and who wants to live with regrets for lack of just trying something new!
