Yes you pay taxes on unemployment. You should recieve a form 1099
and you must (!!!) enter it as income on your tax form.

5 years experience, hurts.
References :
You pay taxes on it because the law says that you do. Pretty simple there!

You're not being double taxed. Unemployment comp is based upon your GROSS pay during the qualification period.

The unemployment trust fund is funded primarily by employer taxes. A few states do allow a small portion of that to be paid by employees but that's really a moot point. The fact that a portion of any taxes that you paid might conceivably wind up funding unemployment is irrelevant and does not mean that you're being double taxed.
References :
Unemployment benefits are paid from money collected from employers. Anything you have paid is deductible.
References :
Why do I have to pay federal taxes on my unemployment money?
From my understanding, they calculate your unemployment benefits from how much you made during certain quarters. And out of these paychecks that you have received, they have already taken federal taxes out, some of which go to the unemployment fund, which means that your unemployment money is your money anyway. So why do we get double taxed on it?
